ZEELAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Aug. 17, 2026) – Addressing how to best address a long-standing main east-west route through Zeeland is before that city’s leaders on Monday night.
Considering how to best utilize the Washington Avenue corridor is a priority in the city’s Strategic Action Plan. Existing roadway, sidewalks, utilities, drive approaches, and private improvements has taken up nearly all available space, and acquiring additional right-of-way may not be a viable solution.
Eberle Traffic Solutions has submitted a proposal to analyze Washington Avenue between State and Carlton streets, looking for ways to address the situation. One idea is to remove the center turn lane in that stretch and reallocate the pavement for sidewalks, green space, and other improvements. Council is being asked to consider approving Eberle’s proposal for a more in-depth study, at a cost of up to $17,500.
A 5:45 PM Work Study Session precedes the 7 PM Regular Meeting of the Zeeland City Council, both in Chambers at Zeeland City Hall (21 S. Elm St.). An online link to the agenda and supporting documents is here.
