ALLEGAN, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Aug. 7, 2026) – As the combination of three fires in eastern Washington State, which has burned over 10,000 acres in nearly a week, is being brought under control, the question of whether such a situation could happen along the Lakeshore is being asked.
That’s because the US Drought Monitor has listed Ottawa and Allegan counties as being “abnormally dry” in its latest report this week. This is due to a lack of substantial rainfall so far this summer, and is the lowest level of intensity designated by this service of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
Allegan County Undersheriff Mike Larsen, who is a member of his county’s Local Emergency Planning Commission, says that officials are ready for this contingency.
The Autumn Lane, Fairview, and Old Trails fires in Spokane County comes as August is National Emergency Management Awareness Month, according to the International Association of Emergency Managers.
