UNDATED (WHTC-AM/FM, Aug. 5, 2026) – A good turnout for an August Primary Election was noted along the Lakeshore.
Ottawa County reported 36.2% of registered voters either went to the polls in person on Tuesday, cast absentee ballots, or participated in a nine-day early election voting window that lasted through this past Sunday, while 29 percent of registered Allegan County voters participated.
The Lakeshore supported the winners of the statewide contested party nomination races for gubernatorial hopefuls John James and Jocelyn Benson, along with Democratic US Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed. As for local contested races, Joe Moss took the Republican nomination in the state House 89th District, while John Wetzel captured the GOP nomination in the state Senate 31st District.
The three county-wide ballot initiatives all passed by margins of 64 percent for Ottawa County Mental Health, 67 percent for Ottawa County Parks, and 72 percent for Allegan County Senior Citizen Services. Local questions also passed for Holland Township and Park Township Public Safety, Olive Township Fire Rescue, Blendon Township and Saugatuck/Douglas Libraries, the Interurban Transit Service, Saugatuck Township Cemetery, and Overisel Township Roads. However, Olive Township Roads failed by 52 percent.
