Doris was most proud of her career with Sears, who was known as Mrs. Sears. She first started as a catalogue lady, then moved on to selling electronics in the new Sears at the Westshore Mall. After proving herself as a dedicated salesperson, she then moved on into selling home appliances, before retiring around 2005. She made many friends during her career at Sears, whom she keeps in touch with.
To have known Doris, is to know her generous soul, humor, strength in adversity and always willing to share stories of her beloved Raymond, her children, grandchildren and of all her friends. She lit up the room whenever she was around. She had a love of yellow roses and was always gifted with a bouquet for birthdays or anniversaries.
Doris was a wonderful seamstress, crafter and collector of all things that gave her meaning to her. She was proud of being a “27-year survivor of ovarian cancer”, adamant at being a fighter in all things that she was faced. Her favorite saying was “God never gives us more than we can handle. “
Considered pet lovers, she and Raymond always had pets living with them; most notably their sweet Bella, a maincoon mix, whom she missed very much when moving to assisted living. Doris loved her family and friends very much and always enjoyed visits, especially loved going out to at and shopping at her favorite places. Doris was an avid reader of James Patterson books.
Doris is preceded in death by her parents; Viola & Samuel Opremchok, her beautiful daughter, Julie Rae Captain, her beloved husband of 54 years, Raymond Edward Captain. She is also preceded in death by her sisters; Carol Klapproth and brother-in-law Lois & Gene Grabowski.
She is survived by her children; Cheryl & Dale Loucks and Scott Captain. Many grandkids; Ryan Dy, Ashley & Sergio Lopez, Krysta Dy, Scottie Captain, Nicholas Captain, Bradley Benson, Andrew VanTil and Halee Captain. She was most proud of her 13 great-grandchildren, whom she loved and treasured, and felt were the legacy of our family.
Doris is also survived by several nieces and nephews; John & Alexis Klapproth, Dave & Chris Klapproth, Lynn Oliver, LA & Brenda Schwerdt, and Christine & John Ford. Brother and sister in laws Conrad & Joyce Captain and John & Luann Captain.
A Celebration of Life will take place at: Central Park Church, August 8, 2026, 3:00 to 7:00 pm 614 Myrtle Avenue Holland MI 49423.
