HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Jun. 30, 2026) – It only took nine days on the calendar before the feel of the proverbial dog days of summer arrived along the Lakeshore.
The National Weather Service office in Grand Rapids has placed an Extreme Heat Warning for Allegan and Ottawa counties through 8 PM on Thursday. This is due to “dangerously hot” conditions, with heat index values up to 105. The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy has also declared an Air Quality Advisory for the region, with pollutants expected to be in the unhealthy for sensitive groups range.
Among areas designated as cooling centers is both of Gateway Mission’s centers (643 S. Waverly Rd.; 356 Fairbanks Ave.). Jason Parks is with the Mission.
Other spots include First United Methodist Church (57 W. 10th St.), the Herrick District Library’s main branch (300 S. River Ave.), the Salvation Army’s offices (104 Clover St. Holland, 310 N. Despelder St. Grand Haven, the Grand Haven Community Center 421 Columbus St.), Christian Neighbors (282 12th St. Plainwell), and the Yankee Springs Township fire station (1425 S. Payne Lake Rd. Wayland).
Forecasters are not predicting any relief from the heat until overnight showers and storms on Friday morning.
