LAKETOWN TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, May 14, 2026) – There was some clarity on a controversial topic in a Lakeshore community on Wednesday evening.
On a 4-1 vote, the Laketown Township Board of Trustees approved proposed changes to a short-term rental ordinance, which would prohibit all new stand-alone homes to be used as STR in all residential zoning districts, while those already licensed to be in existence would be allowed to continue operations under rules which were in place when their license was approved. There has been a moratorium on short term rentals in the township since discussion on these proposed changes began last year, with that restriction set to expire on June 30th.
Six months ago, Chairman Chad Nienhuis and his fellow planning commission members held a joint meeting with township trustees to discuss the matter.
Supervisor Steve Ringelberg spoke for the majority of his colleagues, as well as for constituents’ feedback on the matter, in explaining his vote.
Trustees and planners are slated to go back and address enforcement issues for licensed STR later this summer.
