UNDATED (WHTC-AM/FM, May 6, 2026) – For the most part, voters were in an approving mood when they went to the polls on Tuesday.
Two municipal questions, two sinking fund proposals, and five 18-mill non-homestead tax renewal requests all passed by margins of 53 to 74 percent. Zeeland Township got a one mill renewal over a four-year span for fire services, while the Macatawa Area Express Transit Authority renewed and increased funding to six tenths of a mill through the next five years for operations.
Superintendent Nick Cassidy is pleased that electors approved a 1.25 mill sinking fund request over 10 years for Holland Public Schools.
A similar half mill proposal over three years for Saugatuck Public Schools also passed, while the non-homestead tax renewals were endorsed by voters in the West Ottawa, Zeeland, Grand Haven, Coopersville, and Spring Lake school districts.
Up in the air still is a $110.5 million bond issue for Hopkins Public Schools, to be paid off in 26 years with no tax increase levied on property owners. According to the Allegan County Clerk’s Office, it’s a dead heat at 1,091 for, and 1,091 against.
