GRAND RAPIDS, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Feb. 12, 2026) – There was more to meet the eye in the story of a Hudsonville High star athlete who was shot while training in Alabama.
On Wednesday, 19-year-old Ethan Carter pleaded guilty at US District Court in Grand Rapids to a charge of possession and transfer of a machine gun. This stems from an incident last June in which he gave to an unnamed person a conversion device that turns a semiautomatic gun into a machine gun. ATF agents searched his home several weeks later and found six more such devices, as well as a Glock pistol with that conversion piece installed.
Carter gained attention last July when he was shot seven times during a gun purchase that turned into a holdup in Birmingham, Alabama. He was there training for playing football at Davenport University, and while he was recovering from his wounds, a separate investigation uncovered these allegations that he pleaded guilty to.
Carter, who is being held for violating terms of his bond, is slated for sentencing on June 9th, and could get up to 10 years in prison.
