ZEELAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Feb. 2, 2026) – Now that snowmelt is in place for downtown Zeeland, it’s time to pay for it.
During Monday night’s scheduled biweekly meeting, City Council members are expected to vote on setting a February 16 date for a public hearing concerning the establishment of a Snowmelt Special Assessment. Officials say that, for a two-year period, from July 1st of this year to June 30th of 2028, it will cost nearly $492,000 to maintain a 71,000 square-foot system that was put into place before last winter at a total cost of $3.6 million.
What is being proposed is to have the city foot the majority of that maintenance bill, with around $86,000 tentatively spread among 70 property owners directly benefiting from the snowmelt, according to Mayor Rick VanDorp.
The Zeeland City Council holds a 6 PM Work-Study Session ahead of its 7 PM Business Meeting, both of which are in Council Chambers at Zeeland City Hall (21 S. Elm St.). An online link to the meeting agenda and supporting documents is here.
