JENISON, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Jan. 28, 2026) – The Lakeshore may currently be in the midst of a protracted winter storm stretch, but for those who are responsible for keeping the community safe from weather-related issues, the spring storm season is just around the corner.
On Thursday, February 19th, a Skywarn Weather Spotter Training session will be held in downtown Jenison. Run by both the Ottawa County and Kent County Emergency Management Offices, this seminar looks to enable volunteers to report severe weather and help forecasters issue accurate warnings by identifying severe storms and tornadoes. Attendees will receive reporting and safety tips in learning how to be a weather spotter.
While First Responders, Ham Radio Operators, and other Emergency Management Personnel are encouraged to attend, Ottawa County Emergency Management Director Lou Hunt says that weather enthusiasts and others are more than welcome to come.
The Ottawa and Kent County Skywarn Weather Spotter Training class at Alive Church (263 Church St.) begins at 6:30 PM. The seminar is free, but advance registration is required, with an online link here.
