HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Jan. 23, 2026) – Arctic conditions has descended upon the Lakeshore.
The National Weather Service has an extreme cold warning in effect for Ottawa County, and a Cold Weather Advisory in place for Allegan County, both going through 11 AM on Saturday. This is on top of a Winter Weather Advisory for the region through 7 PM on Friday.
While air temperatures may not get into double figures above zero until Monday, wind chills as low as 30 below could cause frostbite on exposed skin in 30 minutes or less, according to many health experts, and hypothermia risks also increase.
For those without a permanent home, this is a dangerous time. Non-profits that serve those in need, as well as some public buildings, have thrown their doors open to allow persons to at least warm up, if not find a place to stay until conditions improve.
This includes Gateway Mission, whose Executive Director, Jay Riemersma, says that all will be welcome…even those who may have not followed the shelter’s regulations in the past.
Here’s a list of warming centers provided by the Ottawa County Emergency Management Office:
