SAUGATUCK, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Jan. 7, 2026) – The Saugatuck City Council returns to the issue of short term rentals on Wednesday afternoon.
During its 4 PM workshop, in which items will be discussed but no action would be taken, the governing panel will review the first full year of active implementation and enforcement of the city’s STR program, which mandates annual licensing requirements, along with third-party monitoring technology, and standardized public communication tools. While STR license counts remained relatively flat in 2025, city officials believe that it was due to “market stabilization rather than expansion.”
Along those lines, three STR property owners have petitioned council to amend the current ordinance, looking to clarify renewal procedures, improve notice and due process, and correct “unintended outcomes” that arose from administrative gaps during the initial implementation of the ordinance. Whether the panel will consider these changes remains to be seen.
The Saugatuck City Council’s workshop is in the second-floor meeting room of Saugatuck City Hall (102 Butler St.). An online link to the agenda and supporting documents is here.
