ZEELAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Jan. 5, 2026) – Two contract proposals and dealing with operating costs for downtown snowmelt are before the Zeeland City Council during its first business meeting of the New Year on Monday evening.
The governing panel will be asked to approve a $9,440 deal with MCSA Group of East Grand Rapids to conduct a preliminary design for the playground area at Lawrence Park. While the playground itself won’t be moved, the city wants to improve pathways, accessibility, and parental seating. The contract would call for MCSA to come forward with its ideas by March 11th, with the project tentatively slated to be done during the summer of 2027.
Council members will also consider a $24,000 architectural services pact with Tower Pinkster to look at potentially $20 million in municipal building improvement needs that would be address over time.
In addition, the process to establish a snowmelt special assessment district can begin if council approves a resolution for authorizing the City Manager to prepare a report establishing the parameters for such a district. Staff believes that, based on past experience, it would take five resolutions and two public hearings before the district is finalized, with a goal of having it in place by the time summer tax bills are sent out.
A 5:30 Work-Study Session precedes the 7 PM business meeting of the Zeeland City Council, both to be held in Chambers at Zeeland City Hall (21 S. Elm St.). An online link to the agenda and supporting documents is here.
