WRIGHT TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Jan. 4, 2026) – No injuries were reported following a crash along I-96 near Marne on Saturday evening that appeared to stem from a violation of Michigan’s “Move Over” law involving emergency vehicles and passing traffic.
It all started around 7:30 PM near the 16th Avenue exit, as an Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office cruiser was accompanying a tow truck that was attempting to pull a vehicle from the ditch. An eastbound SUV then came up and initially struck the prowl vehicle before veering into the tow truck. Both of those vehicles, although unoccupied at the time, had their emergency lights activated, and all three of the vehicles involved sustained damage.
No injuries were reported among the first responders, as well as among the 20-year-old driver of the SUV and his 22-year-old male passenger, both from Comstock Park. According to the Michigan State Police, the state’s “Move Over” law requires motorists to slow down and move over for stationary authorized vehicles with flashing, rotating, or oscillating lights activated.

On December 23rd, Hamilton Fire Chief David Haverdink lost his life when he was hit by a passing vehicle while he and fellow first responders were addressing a medical incident on Lincoln Road (M-40) near 136th Avenue in Heath Township. That incident also remains under investigation.
