LANSING, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Dec. 30, 2025) – If it seemed as if there weren’t a lot of bill signing ceremonies in Lansing this year…there weren’t.
State lawmakers passed just 74 pieces of legislation in 2025, the fewest bills in a regular session since 1842, when 90 public acts were signed into law. Whether that was good or bad depends on which side of the political aisle one sits in.
For Republican House Speaker Pro Tem Rachelle Smit of Shelbyville, it was a case of quality over quantity.
While Democrat Representative Joey Andrews of St. Joseph saw things a little differently.
With all legislative seats up for election in 2026, it will be interesting to see if more action would be forthcoming from lawmakers in Lansing over the next 12 months.
Both Smit and Andrews made their remarks in separate appearances on Monday’s “WHTC Talk of the Town” program.
