PARK TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Nov. 11, 2025) – Addressing the need for burial space is behind the installation of a columbarium at a final place of rest along the Lakeshore.
On Tuesday afternoon, the first of four such structures will be placed in Park Township’s Lakewood Cemetery, at a cost of $200,000. Elliptical in design, this columbarium will have 26 columns containing six niches each. With each niche able to accommodate two urns, a total of 310 burials are possible.
According to cemetery officials, the use of columbaria not only addresses the national trend of cremation over body casket burials, but also a decreasing amount of ground space available for ground burials. Lakewood Cemetery will be closed during the 1 PM installation of the columbarium, to accommodate the use of a crane in the process.
Last month, the Park Township Board approved a new fee schedule for the three cemeteries in the municipality, in an effort to “relieve budgetary pressure and get rightfully paid for services performed…these fees are normal and customary in surrounding cemeteries.” These changes take effect at the first of the year.
