ZEELAND TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Sept. 23, 2025) – A route some motorists use to bypass I-196 between Hudsonville and Zeeland will be out of commission for a while.
Beginning on Wednesday, Byron Road will be blocked off from 64th Avenue in Vriesland to 76th Avenue. This will be for “permitted” water main work, according to the Ottawa County Road Commission, and should run through next Wednesday, October 1st, depending on the weather. The suggested detour route is Chicago Drive (M-121).
This comes on the heels of the closure of Byron Road between 40th and 32nd avenues, south of Hudsonville, due to a culvert replacement. This work began last Monday, September 15th, and is slated to run through October 10th. The posted detour is up through Riley Street, but last week, two separate injury crashes on that route occurred, which hospitalized three persons, caused a nearby house to suffer damage, and led to a temporary four-way stop placed at the junction of 40th Avenue and Riley Street.
While the interstate and Chicago Drive are suitable bypasses for the Byron Road closures, some may choose to take Adams Street through to Byron Center.
