ALLEGAN, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Jul. 7, 2025) – The Independence Day holiday period is over, but the emphasis on curbing speeding along Michigan roads continues.
Extra patrols by state police troopers, along with local sheriff’s deputies and municipal officers, are looking for motorists who have a “lead foot” on the gas pedal. This despite data from the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute that has seen speed-involved crashes down 20 percent from 2022 to 2023, and a 32 percent decrease from 2019, which was the year prior to the COVID 19 outbreak.
Allegan County Sheriff Frank Baker says that the end of relaxed standards for speed enforcement, due to health protocols during the pandemic, has led somewhat to those reduced crash rates.
Federal funding for extra police patrols in Michigan during the month-long speed enforcement campaign are funneled through the state Office of Highway Safety Planning.
