GEORGETOWN TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Jun. 6, 2025) – A 20-year-old Jenison man has been formally charged following a May 9th shooting near Standale that killed a 19-year-old man.
Westen Meulenberg was ordered held on $50,000 bond by Hudsonville District Court Judge Judy Mulder following a Thursday arraignment on a count of discharging a firearm in a building causing death, but as of Friday morning, he was not listed as an inmate in the Ottawa County Jail. He could be sentenced up to life in prison if convicted.
Meulenberg was attending a “social gathering” at a residence in the area of 2nd Avenue between Lake Michigan and Fennessy drives, when he allegedly took a firearm in the home and fired several rounds through the floor of an upstairs bedroom. One of the bullets went through to a downstairs room and struck Connor Lotterman in the head, causing a mortal wound. Meulenberg was arrested at the scene.
Detectives reportedly determined that the shooting was accidental, and that alcohol was a suspected factor.
