ZEELAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, May 19, 2025) – A few matters will be discussed by the Zeeland City Council on Monday night.
In the 6 PM Work-Study session, the governing panel will go over plans for enforcing parking restrictions on downtown lots. This is an effort to clear up spaces for retail customers, while allowing for long-term parking for property owners, employees, and renters in lots that are as much as a block away.
During the 7 PM business meeting, council will be asked to approve a new three-year collective bargaining agreement between the city and the Police Officers Labor Council, which represents Zeeland’s rank-and-file police officers. Among other changes: It would allow for annual pay increases of four percent, three percent and three percent; adjust overtime to kick in after 80 hours instead of 86; and provides triple pay for holiday shifts, up from two and a half time pay.
Council will also consider having the city join the Ottawa County Tax Foreclosure Avoidance Payment Reduction Program. Put forward by the county Treasurer’s Office, it would allow homeowners who fall behind on paying their assessments to enter an agreement that would keep them from having their property foreclosed and being evicted. The program comes with no cost to the city, would be operated solely by the county, and wouldn’t affect the amount of tax collected on such delinquent property.
The Zeeland City Council meets in Chambers at Zeeland City Hall (21 S. Elm St.). An online link to the meeting agenda and supporting documents is here.
