FENNVILLE, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Apr. 10, 2025) โ With temperatures hovering just above the freezing mark, around 5,200 customers of Michigan Gas Utilities in the Fennville, Saugatuck and Douglas areas spent Wednesday night in the cold.
What the company is calling a โmajor gas line leakโ was reported around 2:40 PM on Wednesday afternoon in the area of 57th Street and 122nd Avenue. Roads were blocked off in the area, while it took crews about six hours to seal off the leak and shut off all natural gas that had been going into the damaged transmission line.
While a cause for what led to the leak wasnโt immediately disclosed, the nature of the issue is such that Michigan Gas Utilities officials are admitting that, โservice may not be fully restored for several days.โ Crews will begin on Thursday to shut off individual customer meters for the duration of the repair effort.
Allegan County Emergency Management is working with the American Red Cross in making warming centers and shelters available for the affected customers. Those needing such assistance are asked to call the Red Cross at 800-733-2767.
