OLIVE TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Mar. 23, 2025) – Make it nine and counting for Ottawa County’s Purchase of Development Rights program that looks to preserve farmland from development.
Last week, the county’s office of Economic Development announced that the 36-acre Veldheer operation off of Blair Street was the ninth property protected by this effort that will guarantee its continued use for agricultural purposes in perpetuity. It’s the second such land in the township to get such protection, following the Shady Side Farm across the street that is owned by relatives of the Veldheer family.
The program is completely funded through private donations, state and federal grants, and landowner contributions, with its most visible vehicle being the annual “Farms are the Tapas” fundraiser. Applications for property owners wishing to participate in this program are being taken through April 25th from this website.
