GRAND HAVEN, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Feb. 27, 2025) – A sure sign of spring is the beginning of seasonal weight restrictions on area roads.
The Ottawa County Road Commission will put such restraints at 6 AM on Friday, in order to protect the integrity of those roadways under its jurisdiction when frost is coming out of the ground. This means that normal legal loads must be reduced by around 35 percent, and vehicles hauling such loads can go no faster than 35 miles per hour.
Ottawa County’s move comes on the same day as neighboring Muskegon County, while Allegan and Kent counties, as well as some nearby communities and the Michigan Department of Transportation, will place the restrictions on Monday. Alex Doty with the OCRC says that this is a cooperative effort, not a competitive one.
Seasonal road weight restrictions should remain in place until the ground thaws completely, normally in a four-to-six-week-long span. A link to more information on these guidelines is here.
