ZEELAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Oct. 21, 2024) – There may not be any additional homes torn down in Zeeland for a while.
During Monday night’s 7 PM biweekly business meeting, the Zeeland City Council will be asked to approve a six-month moratorium on residential demolitions. It is being requested by the city’s Planning Commission in order to study current ordinance language involving the criteria for such actions, and determine whether adjustments to those laws are needed.
According to city officials, 25 percent of the existing homes in Zeeland are more than 84 years old, and 72 percent are more than 44 years old. If the moratorium request is approved, an April 21st date of 2025 would be when it would be lifted.
Council members will discuss this and other matters in a 6 PM work-study session ahead of the business meeting, both of which will be in Chambers at Zeeland City Hall (21 S. Elm St.). An online link to the agenda and supporting documents is here.
