Brenda graduated from Zeeland High School and continued her education later in life at Hope College, where she earned a Bachelor’s degree and graduated with honors. She was a life-long learner, and one of her accomplishments was learning to speak Spanish.
Brenda enjoyed helping people, and worked for many years as a secretary with Zeeland Public Schools. Following her career in the schools, she traveled to Chiapas, Mexico where she completed missionary work with the Reformed Church of America. She also worked for Good Samaritan until her retirement.
She was preceded in death by husband Don Schout and husband Lee Michel. She was also preceded by her sister and brother-in-law Lorraine (Bud) Horn, and brothers-in-law Arnie Disselkoen, Paul Koop, and Wayne Schout.
Brenda is survived by children Mark (Brenda) Schout and Nancee (Arlan) Branderhorst); grandchildren Andrew (Katie) Schout, Erin (Dave) Birkenmeier, Kaleigh (Craig) McKinney, Abby (Josué Villacis) Branderhorst, and Emily (Seth) Baareman. She is also survived by 4 great-grandchildren; brother Randy (Bonnie) Lokers, and in-laws Norma Disselkoen, Judy Koop, Wanda Bobeldyk, Lloyd (Melva) Schout; as well as special friend Mike Otenti.
Brenda’s family would like to extend their gratitude to the staff at American House for the care and support they provided Brenda.
In keeping with Brenda’s wishes, no services are being planned at this time. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Hospice of Holland.
