ZEELAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Sept. 16, 2024) – Water rates in Zeeland are expected to be going up soon.
During tonight’s biweekly business meeting, the Zeeland City Council is expected to approve a nearly five percent hike to “ensure the Zeeland Board of Public Works meet future cash reserve and operating income targets,” says utility General Manager Andy Boatright in a letter to council members, adding, “It is anticipated that similar percentage rate adjustments will be needed in the follow-on years due to the significant economic impact from recent system capital investments for replacement of lead service lines (due to state mandates), and infrastructure renewals and replacements.”
Charts outlining the proposed rate hikes are part of the agenda and supporting documents package for the meeting that can be accessed here.
In addition, council members will be briefed on a contractual ending of the agreement between the Howard Miller Library and Olive Township. That community rejected a millage renewal proposal for library services on the August 6th Primary Election ballot, and although the measure will again be before voters on November 5th, city attorneys advised library officials that the current pact could not be extended past the September 30th expiration date. Limited access to library resources for Olive Township residents will be available until after the results of the November election are certified.
