LAKETOWN TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Sept. 12, 2024) – A Lakeshore community wants to put its proverbial foot down on election day mayhem when November 5th comes around.
During its monthly business meeting on Wednesday, the Laketown Township Board of Trustees unanimously approved a series of new rules regulating where campaign volunteers can hand out materials at a precinct voting place. While state law mandates a 100-foot clearance from an entrance to a polling place for such volunteers, the township resolution prohibits any distribution of any campaign materials for a candidate or a ballot question on township property at any time on Election Day. It pertains to all areas, including the township hall, parks, and the township fire station.
Campaign workers are still able to converse with voters. During the August 6th Primary Election, there was an incident of some pushing and shoving between a voter and a campaign supporter, according to Township Manager Al Meshkin, who put forward this resolution for the board’s consideration.
In other matters, the Laketown Township governing panel approved pay hikes for workers and other officials handling election day matters, along with naming Mary Jo Bertolino to the township’s Parks and Recreation Commission, replacing the late Dick Becker, who died in July. She will serve until the November 5th election, when she can run for her own term on that board.
