GRAND HAVEN TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Aug. 23, 2024) – A 19-year-old Muskegon man found out the hard way about the value of having good brakes following a Friday afternoon pileup south of Grand Haven.
It was the third injury crash of the day reported by Ottawa County Sheriff’s Sergeant Matt Wildfong, as he was among first responders dispatched to US-31 at Comstock Street around 1:50 PM. The SUV that the unnamed motorist was driving was northbound when he attempted to stop for a traffic signal, but the brakes apparently failed. The vehicle first struck a southbound vehicle that was attemping a turn, and then careened into a stopped vehicle on westbound Comstock. The SUV finally coasted into a department store parking lot before coming to a stop.
The Muskegon man was taken to an undisclosed medical facility for treatment of non-life threatening injuries, while the other motorists – a 75-year-old Grand Haven man and a 59-year-old Grand Haven woman – were not hurt. This crash remains under investigation.
