ZEELAND TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Aug. 12, 2024) – A 75-year-old Hudsonville man pedaling his bicycle west of his hometown was hospitalized after being struck on Monday afternoon by a pickup truck.
According to Ottawa County Sheriff’s Sergeant Michael Tamminga, deputies and other first responders were dispatched to 48th Avenue near Ransom Street around 3:25 PM. That was where the unnamed cyclist, pedaling southbound in the northbound lane on 48th Avenue, veered to his right in order to get in the proper lane, and went right into the path of the pickup, driven by a 25-year-old Hudsonville man.
The force of the collision caused the cyclist to be thrown off onto the shoulder of the roadway. He was taken to an undisclosed “local hospital” in stable condition. The motorist and his 22-year-old female passenger, also from Hudsonville, were not hurt.
Tamminga added that alcohol or drugs were not initially suspected to be a factor as the incident remains under investigation.
