HOLLAND TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Aug. 5, 2024) – Why is there a hold up in getting utility help to those in need in Ottawa County right now?
On Monday, the county’s Community Action Agency announced that, “Due to a large influx in utility requests, OCCAA is currently taking a temporary pause on all new utility assistance requests. We will continue to process applications that were received prior to (August 5), and will alert the community once we are able to reopen new applications.”
The utility assistance program is for those who are in danger of losing service for heat, water, electric and deliverable fuels, or to have such service restored. The agency works in partnership with the state Department of Health and Human Services, along with utility providers, to find solutions for those in distress who cannot keep up with bill payments. The state makes most of the eligibility decisions. Funding for the program comes from a variety of grants, along with the annual “Walk for Warmth” event that raised over $16,000 in March at Window on the Waterfront Park in Holland.
Those in need right now are asked to call 2-1-1 to find available resources until the CAA’s program resumes.
