Joyce Eva Hyma was born in Holland, Michigan, one of four children and the only daughter of Lawrence and Eva Hyma. At the young age of 19, Joyce’s adventurous spirit inspired her to board a bus and head for the sunny skies and sandy beaches of California.
After connecting with a roommate in Manhatten Beach, Joyce found work at the First National Bank where she met the love of her life, a bank Vice President named Donald Eugene Werley. They struck up a relationship, and shortly after the smitten couple took a trek across the Mojave desert to the bright lights of Las Vegas to get married.
Back in California, they welcomed five children into the fold—Laurie, Cheryl, Teri, Mark, and Mike. Work for Donald then took the family back to Las Vegas where Scott joined the crew. Joyce spent her days caring for her growing family, and when concerns for their well being arose, the couple decided Holland, Michigan would be a much better environment to raise their children.
Back in Holland once again, the couple settled on 19th street where Joyce doted on her six children plus two more that joined the happy family—Todd and Stephanie. Once the children were in school, Joyce returned to the work force as a manager at Warm Friend Resthaven where she was a favorite among the residents.
Once Joyce’s grandchildren came along, she decided it was time to retire so she could spend more time with her family. She then bought her beloved home on the South Side of Holland where she enjoyed her beautiful shady yard and plenty of visits from her children and grandchildren, when she would entertain them with stories of her past and wisdom for their futures.
Joyce is survived by: her children, Laurie Brock, Cheryl TerHaar, Mark (Lisa) Werley, Mike (Barbara) Werley, Todd (Jennifer) Werley, and Stephanie (Joe) Morse; 24 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Joyce was preceded in death by: her husband Donald Werley; daughter, Teri Sivertson; and son, Scott Werley.
