GEORGETOWN TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, July 24, 2024) – The signs are still out for a danger at a park near Jenison.
Earlier this year, residents living near Maplewood Park off of 12th Avenue noticed something unusual growing in the area, but thought that it was just hogweed. Georgetown Township parks officials began monitoring the situation, and around the Independence Day holiday, it was determined that the growth was actually poison hemlock, and warning signs were posted for the park and the adjacent splash pad.
Master Gardener Jan Meeuwsen of DeBruyn Seed in Zeeland studied all varieties of poisonous plants while a student at Michigan State University.
Township officials have opted not to use chemicals due to the proximity of the plant to Maplewood Lake and nearby farmland, and bids for contractors to take out the plant mechanically could be awarded at the next Township meeting on August 12th.
