SAUGATUCK, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, July 17, 2024) – The dean of public school superintendents along the Lakeshore will be retiring in 12 months.
Dr. Tim Travis gave such notice to the Saugatuck Board of Education during Monday’s monthly business meeting. Calling time on four decades in education, the past 20 years in the Lakeshore district, he wanted to see through the completion on renovation projects funded by a 2020 bond proposal approval, along with looking forward to spending more time with his family.
Travis, who had been Saugatuck High’s Principal, took over as superintendent for Rolfe Timmerman in January of 2018, and over the next six years, he not only guided the district through the COVID 19 outbreak, but helped in getting voters to approve a $35.6 million-dollar bond issue after two previous rejections, and led the effort to change the district’s nickname from Indians to Trailblazers.
Before coming to Saugatuck, Travis was with the Unionville-Sebewaing Area Schools east of Bay City, guiding the USA Patriots to the 1998 Class C and 2004 Division 7 state football titles, and earning a place in the Michigan High School Football Coaches Hall of Fame nine years ago.
The Saugatuck Board plans to establish a search subcommittee and retain a head-hunting firm before appointing a new superintendent that will succeed Travis at the end of the 2024-25 Academic Year.
