Hazel Van Koevering, 87, of Zeeland went home to the Lord on Friday, July 12, after a brief stay at Quincy Place Senior Living in Holland.
She was the daughter of Gordon and Margaret Peters and raised on the family farm in Overisel. After graduating from Zeeland High School, she briefly worked in the egg plant that was part of Hamilton Farm Bureau. After several months, she entered the nursing program at Pine Rest Christian Hospital in Grand Rapids where she made numerous life-long friendships, despite the concerns of her parents.
While working at Pine Rest she was introduced to her future husband, Paul, by a friend. They married in 1961. She worked for several years at Parkview Nursing Home. Later Stan Ellens recruited her to work for them at a new rest home, Haven Park. She worked there nearly 30 years, as a charge nurse, administrator, and helped establish the Gilead Unit for Alzheimer patients.
Along with working as a nurse, she was involved in the lives of her three boys serving as a Cub Scout leader, school volunteer, and was part of the group that created the first all-night senior party for Zeeland High School graduates.
In retirement, she and Paul traveled taking numerous barefoot Windjammer cruises in the Caribbean, Europe, and Japan. They also did numerous mission trips to Quito, Ecuador; Cook College, in Phoenix, AZ; and Wycliffe in Tucson, Arizona.
She was a member of the First Reformed Church where she was active with Ladies Aid, and the JOY Group.
Hazel was preceded in death by her husband, Paul; sister-and-brother-in-law, Lois and Jason Boersen; brother-in-law, Keith and Lucille Van Koevering; and sister-in-law Rose and Roger Beekman.
She is survived by her ‘boys’, Kurt Van Koevering, Kent Van Koevering and Kraig and Jody Van Koevering; grandchildren, Ashton Van Koevering, Tyce and Kristen Van Koevering, and Reagan Van Koevering; and brother-and-sister-in-law Gary and Barb Peters.
Visitation will be held from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. followed by a funeral service at 3 p.m Wednesday July 17th at First Reformed Church, 125 E. Lincoln Ave., Zeeland. The burial will be in Zeeland Cemetery.
