HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, July 12, 2024) – Nobody was hurt, but a family near downtown Holland will be displaced for a while following a residential fire on Friday evening.
Department of Public Safety Fire Services crews were dispatched to the area of West 9th Street and Pine Avenue just before 6 PM on reports that smoke had been coming from the roof of a residence. They spotted the smoke upon arrival, and after making sure that all occupants had safely exited the structure, firefighters were able to quickly douse the flames, remaining on the scene for over two hours to make sure no hot spots flared up.
An initial investigation by Fire Marshal Bret Groendyke indicated that the blaze started in the attic and may have accidentally been ignited by an electrical fault. Damage was contained to the attic and a room below where the fire had started.
“The department would like to remind the community to be cautious of breakers and fuses that regularly trip inside their homes. This is likely an indication of an electrical problem that could lead to a fire. In such instances it is best to contact a licensed electrician to investigate the problem and make repairs in necessary. Finally, don’t forget to check smoke alarms on a monthly basis. These devices do save lives.” – Chris Tinney, Captain of Fire Operations, Holland Department of Public Safety
No financial loss estimate was initially made.
