LAKETOWN TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, July 5, 2024) – After 35 years, Al Meshkin has decided to step away as Laketown Township’s manager.
He gave notice of his intentions in a formal letter to the township board during a workshop session on Wednesday, indicating that he would retire from the post on January 3rd. During his tenure that began in 1990, Meshkin has seen the Lakeshore municipality acquire Wolters Woods, Sanctuary Woods, Huyser Farm and Shore Acres parks, along with the Felt Mansion. In addition, the township set up 12 miles of bike paths; built a new fire station; acquired more land for its beach; and added pickleball courts to the township hall park campus.
“In January I will leave the township with the best fund balance it has ever had, and an extremely well trained, courteous, efficient and effective township staff. Please take good care of both.” – Al Meshkin, in his retirement letter.
The township board, at its next business meeting this coming Wednesday, is expected to formally establish the process for naming a new manager. This would include retaining a search firm, setting forth job qualifications and responsibilities, and establishing a salary range which should be between $115,000 and $140,000 annually. Meshkin is retiring from a position in which he was earning just over $139,000, according to township documentation.
