OLIVE TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, July 3, 2024) – For the second time in six days, a sheriff’s deputy in Michigan will be laid to rest.
Funeral services for William “Bill” Butler Jr. will be held on Wednesday at 11:00 AM at the Hillsdale College Christ Chapel. The 51-year-old Hillsdale County deputy died after being shot by a suspect last Thursday. The suspect, 34-year-old Eric Fiddler of Jonesville, who had been wanted on several warrants, died in a shootout with police about four hours later. It’s the first time since 1930 a Hillsdale County police officer has died in the line of duty.
Meanwhile, two persons allegedly involved in the gunning down of Oakland County Sheriff’s Deputy Bradley Reckling are still awaiting a court appearance. The 30-year-old Reckling was shot and killed on June 22nd in Detroit as he followed a stolen vehicle. An 18-year-old, Karim Moore, has been arraigned in connection with the incident. Reckling’s funeral was last Friday.
Ottawa County Sheriff Steve Kempker sent a delegation of deputies and staffers to suburban Detroit last Friday, and will send another to Hillsdale on Wednesday.
