LAKETOWN TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, July 2, 2024) – It apparently is much tougher to get away with taking souvenirs from a beach along the Lakeshore.
Laketown Township officials announced on Tuesday the recovery of a rescue ring that was stolen from the township’s beach last week. Security cameras at the site along Lake Michigan off of 142nd Avenue captured the images taken during the evening hours of June 26th of four persons leaving the parking lot with the ring around the neck of one of them. Those cameras also spotted the suspects attempting to remove a handicapped-accessible parking sign, along with the vehicle and license plate as they left the area.
Although a new ring was in place last weekend, the stolen ring was returned to the beach on Friday by the Allegan County Sheriff’s Department, which is continuing the investigation into the matter. No arrests were immediately disclosed, as the township is pursuing charges.
The ring and rip current warning signs were placed at the beach last year after the township’s parks and rec commission purchased them in 2022. The issue of stolen life rings have plagued beaches along the Lakeshore for years, as visitors have tried to take them away as souvenirs of their visits.
