SALEM TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, June 29, 2024) – Nobody was hurt as the Allegan County Sheriff’s Department Dive Team had to get a motor vehicle out of Monterey Lake near Burnips on Saturday afternoon.
Crews were called to the lake just before 4 PM on a report that the vehicle had gone about 30 to 40 yards into the lake, in around 10 feet of water, and that there was a dog inside. The canine was rescued by its owner prior to the arrival of sheriff’s deputies, the Salem Township Fire Department, and Wayland EMS staffers.
Since the vehicle was not visible from above the water, the sheriff’s marine patrol used sonar equipment to spot the sunken vehicle, and the dive team was able to get it up to the surface.
There was no immediate word from the sheriff’s department as to the circumstances which led to the vehicle being in the water, other than that alcohol is not believed to be a factor, as the incident remains under investigation.
