ALLEGAN, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, June 24, 2024) – Off-road vehicles can be on some Allegan County roads this summer.
Last week, the county’s road commission approved opening all county roads to ORV’s, with some exceptions, in 11 townships. Under the terms of the ORV ordinance adopted by the Board of Commissioners three years ago, along with provisions of state law, the road commission can restrict 30% of county roads from ORV use.
Sheriff Frank Baker says that regular motorists need to treat ORV’s as equals on the road.
Safety concerns that were voiced in 2021 when the county board passed a revised ordinance haven’t come to pass thus far.
The 14 townships now allowing ORV’s on county roads are: Allegan, Casco, except Blue Star Highway, Clyde, Dorr, Ganges, Heath, Hopkins, Lee, Manlius, Martin, Monterey, Salem, Trowbridge, and Valley. The road commission displays on its website the county roads closed to ORV transit.
