GEORGETOWN TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, June 24, 2024) – A 59-year-old Grandville man has lost his life after being struck by a SUV while pedaling his bike north of Jenison last Wednesday morning (June 19), and a 39-year-old Allendale woman has been charged in his death.
First responders were dispatched to Fillmore Street near 28th Avenue around 8:40 AM. That was where the eastbound SUV, driven by Jehnel Jean Pore, crossed the center line in a curved section of roadway and struck the helmeted Douglas Sjoerdsma, who was heading westbound on the right shoulder on his bicycle.
The cyclist was flown to Corewell-Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids, where he died from his injuries the following day, while Pore also sustained minor injuries and had to be taken to an undisclosed medical facility before she went into the Ottawa County Jail. She was initially charged with operating while intoxicated causing serious injury and moving violation causing injury counts, both of which may be amended now that Sjoerdsma has succumbed. She remains held on $50,000 bond.
The matter remains under investigation, and tips to the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department or Ottawa County Silent Observer (877-887-4536) are encouraged.
