LAKETOWN TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, June 22, 2024) – It didn’t cost as much to tear down the Huyser House as initially thought.
On Wednesday, the Laketown Township Parks and Recreation Commission approved a $26,000 bill from Specialized Demolition to level the 85-year-old structure off of 142nd Avenue and 64th Street over a four-day period earlier this month. The initial contract with the Hamilton-based firm was for nearly $30,000, but a lower than expected cost for asbestos abatement, as well as budgeting for removing a septic tank, but no such tank was found on the property.
The township board had endorsed the commission’s recommendation to tear down the house despite efforts by some to save the structure. Plans for the future of the Huyser Farm Park, which the township had acquired in 2001, are pending.
