ZEELAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, June 3, 2024) – Although the Zeeland City Council is not expected to take any formal actions during its business meeting on Monday evening, a couple of matters for future consideration will be discussed beforehand.
The first is a Personal Property Tax Reimbursement Check from the State of Michigan. It comes annually in the month of May, and is the second of the fiscal year, after the first check arrived in October. City officials say that this current amount of over $1.5 million was “quite significant,” and they want council members to consider what to do with this windfall.
Past expenditures included expansion of the Felch Street Cemetery, Main Avenue Streetscape and the ongoing downtown Snowmelt Project, along with paying off pension liability. The matter will be formally brought up during Council’s next scheduled business meeting on June 17th.
The other issue is building a new UV disinfection building at the Zeeland BPW’s Clean Water Plant, at an estimated cost of $2.9 million. This is around $700,000 more than initially planned, due mainly to replacing the building instead of replacing equipment for meeting future needs. Council is expected to award a bid for this project on July 1st.
The study session in which these, and other matters, will be discussed but not decided upon is at 6:15 PM, ahead of the 7 PM business meeting in Chambers at Zeeland City Hall (21 S. Elm. St.). An online link to the agenda and supporting documents is here.
