DEARBORN, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, May 23, 2024) – The green flag may fly for racers in Indianapolis and Charlotte on Sunday, but for motorists along the Lakeshore, across the state and around the nation, the symbolic start of the unofficial summer vacation season drops on Friday.
The American Automobile Association is projecting nearly 44 million people will hit the roads, rails and runways for the upcoming holiday weekend, up five percent from last year. Adrienne Woodland with the Auto Club office in Dearborn says that Michigan will tick just slightly less at four percent.
It also indicates a growing overall trend in travel.
Triple A projects over 378,000 calls for service nationwide during the Memorial Day weekend, mostly for flat tires, dead batteries and lockouts. The agency has also activated its Tow to Go program (855-286-9246) from Friday night through Tuesday morning in Michigan and northern Indiana, which will provide a free tow to a safe location within a 10 mile radius of where the vehicle is located for members and non-members.
As for fuel prices…
The increase is already noticeable, as Triple A’s statewide average of $3.69 as of Thursday morning is a nickel more than on Wednesday, and the mean stands at $3.71 in Ottawa County and $3.78 in neighboring Allegan County.
