Kathy met Doug in eighth grade, beginning a deep, 63-year friendship. They married in 1969. Her service for Christ included being a loving wife, mother and grand-mother; a remarkably varied nursing career; support for Doug’s pastoral work in five churches and Interserve, USA; trips to care for mission partners in hard places – Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Kyrgyzstan, Cambodia, and more. People all over the world enjoyed Kathy’s open, sincere, honest, caring and faithful friendship. She was equally adept at “homemaking”, mentoring younger women, or critiquing a sermon.
Kathy loved her grandchildren (!!!), the Pacific Coast, Sierra hiking, baseball, Nordic skiing, Lake Michigan, visits to Türkiye and Turkish cuisine, fine wines, Sugar Island, Wally and Farley, singing in worship; being with friends and family; sitting with Doug in front of Michigan wood fires or Hawaiian sunsets. Her love of life, humor, common sense, beauty, smile and companionship will be missed.
The Lord gave (a wonderful woman) and the Lord has taken away (too soon, for us); but we who loved Kathy and grieve her death can still choose to say, “Blessed be the name of the Lord”, and she would say, “Amen”.
Visitation times for the family are 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm, Friday, May 3 at Yntema Funeral Home Zeeland, 251 South State Street, Zeeland. The memorial service will be 11:00am, Saturday, May 4 at Covenant Life Church, 101 Columbus Ave., Grand Haven. In lieu of flowers, you may honor Kathy with gifts to Interserve, USA or charity of your choice.
