PORT HURON, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Apr. 20, 2024) – One of the utility companies that has customers in the greater Lakeshore area is alerting them of a scam involving settling outstanding balances.
A statement from Port Huron-based SEMCO Energy, issued on Friday, claims that unknown perpetrators have called some customers, as well as sending messages, about the utility’s 800 number, and offering quick and easy bill payment set up. Some of those marks have called a fake 800 number, provided payment information, and have been victimized by financial losses from their bank accounts. Spoofing through called ID has also been reported.
SEMCO officials say that, if anyone gets such a call, hang up and notify the utility at its actual 800 number (800-624-2019) to verify. Delete any suspicious text or email asking for payment, and if a visitor without proper SEMCO information comes in person asking for money, or aggressively attempting to sell products and services, close the door and contact authorities.
Customers should pay bills through the company’s website, and refer to their bill for proper contact information.
While SEMCO has issued this latest consumer alert, scammers have also targeted other utilities and public entities in similar schemes to defraud the public.
