ALLEGAN, MI (WHTC-AM, Apr. 3, 2024) – One of the two sheriffs along the Lakeshore is stepping down at the end of the year voluntarily, while the other is hoping to stay on the job for another four years.
On Tuesday, Allegan County Sheriff Frank Baker submitted paperwork for placing his name on the Republican ballot for the August 6th Primary Election. A 33-year veteran of the department, he was undersheriff under Blaine Koops until winning the 2016 election when Koops retired. During Baker’s tenure, the sheriff’s department moved from cramp quarters adjacent to the county courthouse into its current headquarters at the former Haworth seat factory. While no Democrat has yet filed paperwork prior to the April 23rd deadline, Baker does have a listed primary challenger in Dean Brandt of Hamilton.
In January, Ottawa County Sheriff Steve Kempker announced his intention to step down at year’s end following two four-year terms. Undersheriff Eric DeBoer and Interim County Administrator Jon Anderson are listed as Republican candidates for the primary, with no Democrats having filed thus far.
