Edmund Anderson, 95, died peacefully on March 29, 2024. A much loved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, Ed answered his call of being a teacher as a professor, a parent, a grandparent, and a mentor to many. Ed was a kind, gentle, devoted and deep thinking individual. He was married on August 16,1997 to Ann Piet.
Ed was an active member at Hope church serving on the Consistory and teaching classes. Ed enjoyed attending and teaching classes at the Hope Academy of Senior Professionals (HASP), serving as the Education Leader for many years and as President.
Ed and Ann spent their retirement serving in the community and enjoyed traveling, and spending time with family and friends. Ed was an avid gardener enjoying his many plants and flowers in his yard. Ed and Ann spent their evenings reading and were members of two book clubs. They participated in the many family holidays, graduations, birthdays, weddings, soccer games, hockey games, concert performances, of their grandchildren in Michigan, Illinois and Wisconsin.
Ed retired from the University of Illinois as an Emeritus Professor. He was the Executive Head of Pharmacology for the system-wide College of Medicine at the University of Illinois for many years. Ed was also a professor at the New Jersey College of Medicine and a visiting Scientist to the neurology departments of the University of Basel, the University of Zurich, and the University of Miami College of Medicine during his career. Ed enjoyed research and published widely, serving on the editorial boards of several scientific brain and pharmacology journals. He served on several national committees including for the National Institute of Health and the Merit Review Board on Neurobiology for the VA. He completed his PhD at the University of Washington Medical School.
Ed leaves behind his beloved family, his wife of 26 years Ann, and their children Ruth (Paul) Parks, Erik (Londa) Anderson, Laura Atkin, Chris (Sandy) Bajema, Mark (Colleen) Bajema, 15 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. Ed was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Chad and Roger, his son Matthew, his son-in-law Bill Atkin, his first wife Venice Anderson and his second wife Judy Anderson.
The family thanks Anchor Care and Holland Hospice for assisting Ann in the care of Ed in his final months.
A Visitation will be held on Monday, April 8th, 2024 at 10:00 a.m. at Hope Church, Holland, Michigan. The Memorial service and a commitment service in the Hope Church Memorial Gardens will follow at 11:00 a.m. Reverend Dr. Gordon Wiersma will be officiating. Attendees are invited to a reception afterwards at Hope Church.
