ALLEGAN, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Mar. 25, 2024) – There may have been some intermittent lane and road closures this month due to pothole repair and other maintenance issues, but the road construction season begins in earnest along the Lakeshore on Monday.
Work on reconstructing the junction of Cedar Street, Hubbard Street, Ely Street, Jenner Drive and Marshall Street in Allegan – better known as the junction where M-89 veers off to the east towards Otsego and M-40 heads south towards Gobles – into a roundabout is expected to last through Thanksgiving. The $7 million project is a partnership between the city of Allegan and the Michigan Department of Transportation, and includes sidewalk and ramp improvements to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act, along with resurfacing M-89 between Monroe Street (M-222) and 29th Street.
John Richard with the Grand Rapids office of M-DOT says that awareness of construction zones starts before a motorist even gets into a vehicle.
Negotiating construction zones is admittedly an exercise in patience, but construction worker safety should be paramount in the minds of motorists.
There will be a public meeting this Tuesday, from 4-5:30 PM, at the Howard Miller Community Center (14 S. Church St.) to go over the planned rebuilding of Business 196, from US-31 to 88th Avenue, that is slated to begin next week. This $17 million, 4.5-mile project is also expected to run through Thanksgiving.
