LANSING, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Mar. 13, 2024) – Unemployment rose slightly along the Lakeshore and across the state in January.
In numbers posted on Wednesday by the Michigan Department of Technology, Management and Budget, not seasonally-adjusted jobless rates rose in all 17 major labor market areas over the month, and all but one of the 83 counties also saw rises in this category in the first 31 days of 2024. State officials say that this trend is typical for this time of the year.
Although unemployment was up two tenths of a percentage point, from 2.7 percent to 2.9 percent, Ottawa County tied with Kent and Livingston counties for the lowest jobless rate in Michigan during January, while Allegan County had a similar rise to 3.4 percent, tied with Calhoun County for seventh overall. These figures are down six tenths of a percentage point in Ottawa County as compared to a year ago, and nine tenths in Allegan County.
